Assignment in Tanzania with donated stoma instruments

In Kibosho, a small Tanzanian village at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, there is the Kibosho Hospital with its own dental clinic. With donated Stoma instruments in their luggage, the two young dentists Dr. Elisa Riekert and Dr. Benedikt Spiegelsberger set out to support the dental care of the local population. Contrary to their expectations, the dental clinic has developed into a kind of special clinic, also thanks to the numerous donations and under the competent management of Dr. Francis Roman. Even patients from the capital Dar es Salaam, about 600 km away, are referred to the clinic.

Despite the relatively good equipment and training of the local dentists, however, Western standards do not prevail here. The primary work of the two volunteers was to train hygiene and treatment quality and to instruct the assistant staff in basic hygiene procedures, such as chair disinfection after each patient, regular change of instruments, hand hygiene, etc. Thanks to the donations they brought with them and the materials already available, the two were able to establish a good treatment concept during two labor-intensive and exciting weeks in February.
